DOT Drug Screening Program Management Solutions

As of 1/1/2018, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has expanded the existing required list of illicit drugs for FMCSA CDL driver testing to include 4 semi-synthetic prescription drugs. The addition of these drugs is intended to address the nationwide epidemic of prescription painkiller abuse.

Random/On-Going and Consortium Solutions

The goal of random drug testing is to “deter” employees from using. A vital part of the strategy of this program is to make sure the policy is widely known by posting notices throughout the workplace. Consortiums serve to help ensure an unbiased selection of employees to be tested by making them part of a larger group.

Reasonable Suspicion and Post Accident Solutions

Supervisors taking action while observing “reasonable suspicion” can often times help to avoid the need for a “post accident” drug screening. Training your supervisors to recognize and report symptoms of drug use is a key component in protecting the safety, health, and welfare of employees, as well as the general public.

NOTE: Specimen Validity Testing

Specimen validity testing is an important part of every urine drug test. It provides clinicians with critical information about the accuracy and reliability of drug test results, and verifies that the specimen submitted is a valid human urine specimen.

All three of these important criteria must fall within the range of normal human urine for a urine sample to be considered valid: Creatinine, Specific Gravity, pH.

Random, Ongoing, and Consortium Panels

The Random, Ongoing, and/or Consortium programs use the same SAMHSA-certified drug panels as the non-DOT and DOT panels. Each company’s specific goals, needs, and policies dictate the panel required.

A drug screening consortium is a collection of various companies with 49 or less employees that need DOT drug and alcohol testing, and/or non-DOT testing. The member companies add their employees to a combined random consortium testing pool.

For 50 or more employees, the company is set up on its own individual random and/or ongoing drug testing program, no consortium enrollment needed.

By using a random selection process, employers ensure that there is no bias and that all employees have an equal chance of being selected.

Reasonable Suspicion and Post Accident Panels

The Reasonable Suspicion and Post-Accident programs use the same SAMHSA-certified drug panels as the non-DOT and DOT panels. It is the goal, need and policy of the company that dictates the panel required.

“Reasonable Suspicion” testing is based on individualized suspicion of a particular employee believed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, in violation of company policy.

“Post-Accident” testing is performed after an employee has been involved in an accident while at work.

Signs of Reasonable Suspicion on the job might include:

  • Bloodshot eyes/dilated pupils

  • Slurred speech

  • Unsteady walk/movements

  • Difficulty staying awake

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
