Pre-Employment background screens are an absolute no-brainer. The potential liability associated with the decision to “skip the screening” and “hope for the best” can be huge. However, employment or pre-employment are not the only reasons background screenings are valuable.
Have you ever gone to a job interview worried about what might be found on your background check? Initiate a preemptive screening on yourself. Arm yourself with that knowledge ahead of time. Come clean and let the potential employer know what they are going to find.
Honesty is always the best policy. Certainly trying to hide what they are going to find anyway, doesn’t help you to get the job. Additionally, it’s also a good way to find out if there is any false information or identity theft on your BG check, so that you have the opportunity to correct it.
Include a credit check while you are at it from one or all of the 3 main consumer credit reporting agencies in the United States…Equifax, Experian, TransUnion or sites like annualcreditreport.com or freecreditreport.com. By law, you are allowed one credit report from each agency annually. It is prudent to take advantage of this and is another method to ensure you are not a victim of identity theft.
Next, and perhaps most importantly, we need to be aware of whom we are bringing in or allowing to be in our families lives. Screening these people can provide much desired peace of mind.
